Day 20

Consolation of Israel by Bella T. | FSM Student

Luke 2:25–35

Simeon has been waiting all his life for the Messiah to come. In Luke 2:25–35, we find him saying that now that he has seen the hope for our world, he can die in peace. Simoen uses the word “sovereign” to describe God, which means possessing all power.

This is God’s character! He is kind and uses His strong, all-powerful will to protect and care for us. Not only has Simeon lived to see the arrival of the Messiah, but we hear him prophesy of Jesus’ death on the cross.

He tells Mary about how Jesus will bring some to their knees and others to a place they never thought they could reach. Simeon says that Jesus will be spoken against as though He were on trial for wrongdoing —even though He lived a perfect life.

And finally, he foresaw the grief that Mary would feel when Jesus was killed. We can feel this grief too, but it is always mixed with gratitude and joy for Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.
