Day 6

Day 6

Word Was God by Tyler R.

John 1:1–5

You may have heard Jesus described as “the Son,” “the Christ,” and “the Messiah,” but did you know that John is the only book that calls Him “the Word”?

Jesus became the fulfillment of God’s promise to offer us redemption from the deserved punishment of our sin when, as John later says in this very chapter, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” This tells us some very significant things about Jesus and forces us to ask ourselves: Who do you believe Jesus is? Is he a wise moral teacher? Is He a miracle worker? Is He just or a kind person?

John 1:1–5 tells us three things. First, He tells us that in the beginning was the Word. Sound familiar? If you need a refresher, turn to the very first words of your Bible! Second, John tells us that the Word was with God. Jesus, the Father, and the Spirit are together in perfect union. Third, John tells us very clearly that Jesus IS God. He is both fully God and fully man; He’s not 50/50!

These are pretty big characteristics of Jesus, aren’t they? Never forget that, at the end of these verses, John reminds us that He is also light, and light drives out the dismal hopelessness of the darkness we all deserve.
